What is PVD?

Peripheral Vascular Disease, or PVD, is caused by a buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries of the leg. Symptoms of PVD include numbness or tingling in the leg, foot or toes, a bluish or reddish discoloration of the skin, sores or infections that do not heal, weakness in the legs or arms, and a dull, cramping pain in the hips, thighs, calves or buttocks. If left untreated, many face amputation of the limb or death.

What is the SilverHawk and how does it treat PVD?

The SilverHawk is a small device with a rotating blade that is used to clean out plaque from inside the artery. Dr. Scott Reid of Mid Illini Surgical Associates is a leading surgeon in the fight against PVD, and one of the few physicians in the central Illinois area to use this state-of-the-art device. The procedure involves inserting the SilverHawk through a small incision in the patient’s groin. Once the blockage has been identified, the SilverHawk’s tiny blade shaves the plaque from the artery wall, collects on the tip and is removed.

What are the results?

The results of this procedure can be life changing. The pain of the clogged arteries ceases and blood flow resumes to the arteries, thus improving circulation. Unsightly and often debilitating wounds heal, and patients are able to return to a normal lifestyle. The procedure itself takes one to two hours, and many can be performed on an outpatient basis.
