Colon & Rectal Cancer is
Largely Preventable
How can this be? Over 98% of colon and rectal cancer is of the
adenocarcinoma type, which is aggressive and difficult to treat with radiation
and chemotherapy. Surgery is the most effective treatment, however, colon
and rectal cancer is often discovered at a stage when surgery alone cannot
assure a good chance for a cure.
The key is screening the population. Early detection and removal of polyps
before cancer develops or before cancer spreads can save many lives.
Effective Screening
The only effective tool for both screening and
treating polyps is a colonoscopy. This is an
outpatient procedure in which the physician
visualizes the inner lining of the colon and
rectum. Polyps identified may be
removed at the same time.
Play It Safe
Who should receive a screening
colonoscopy? Anyone aged 50 or
older, with or without a strong family
history of colon or rectal cancer
should consider this option.
